Middlebury College Musical Players

MCMP Organizational Meeting Summary
April and May, 2004
  • How many musicals?
Because of MCMP's continuing success and growing budget, the possibility of producing two musicals in the 2004-2005 school year (one in the fall, one in the spring) was discussed and met with enthusiasm, and it was suggested that one musical have a large cast and the other have a small one (since a smaller and more experienced cast would be more capable of rising to the challenges of musicals that would ordinarily be discarded as too difficult.) While this proposition was well-received, it brought about the issue of the place of the Rocky Horror Picture Show in the year's schedule. It had been hoped by several members that Rocky could be re-performed, or even made into an annual production, but it was acknowledged that producing three musicals in one school year would be difficult and taxing on all involved. However, it was decided that MCMP should produce both a fall and spring musical in the '04-'05 school year.
  • Which musicals?
The suggestion that MCMP produce "Urinetown" as a musical next year was met with great enthusiasm but the royalties wouldn't be released until the fall, so it was penciled in as a spring musical. The desire that MCMP avoid "high-school" musicals was expressed, particularly since the 2003-2004 budget allowed for a greater range of choices. Singin' in the Rain, Kiss Me Kate, Crazy for You, and She Loves Me were all suggested, and She Loves Me was decided on as the fall musical for 2004.
  • New officers
New officers were elected for 2004-2005. Mark Barber '06 was elected administrator, Anna Murray '07 as secretary, Kate Doorley '06 as treasurer for the fall semester, and Merissa Kraham '06 as treasurer for the spring semester. Nick Cloutier '06 and Caitlin Dennis '06.5 allowed their names to be tentatively put down as potential directors for the following year, and the question was raised of whether the theater department would allow students to receive 400 or 500 level credit for directing an MCMP musical. Theater majors offered to investigate.
  • MCMP and the theater department
The desire to obtain the use of a stage other than the McCullough social space was once again strongly expressed. Kevin Velez, Erin King, Mark Barber, Shannon Gmyrek, Merissa Kraham, and Anna Murray volunteered to meet to discuss the best way to approach the theater department with this request, and Erin King, Shannon Gmyrek, and Anna Murray were elected as representatives. They met with Professor Doug Sprigg, chair of the theater department, and Allison Rimmer, the technical director. The two explained that although they would like to support the MCMP, the faculty-directed plays alone left very little availability in either the Seeler Studio Theater or Wright Theater. However, it was agreed that the theater department and MCMP should establish a closer working relationship in the future, and the meeting ended on friendly and optimistic terms.
  • Good luck to our departing seniors! We'll miss you!
