Smith
enters his 22nd season on the
Middlebury staff and his 17th
season at the helm of the
baseball program. Smith also
served as an assistant football
coach at the College from 1979 to
1994, and he is currently
director of the physical
education, club sports, and
intramural programs at
Middlebury. In '99, he received
the "Edward P. Markey Award"
given by St. Michael's College to
the person who has made
outstanding contributions to
Vermont collegiate baseball.
Following the 20-win season in
'99, Smith was named the NESCAC
coach of the year.
Smith
played football at the University
of Delaware, where he graduated
in '72. After commencement, he
took a graduate assistant job at
the University of Maine. He
became a full-time assistant
coach the next year and received
his master's degree there in '76.
Smith then took an assistant
football coaching job at Maine
Maritime Academy, where he served
1976-77, and an assistant job at
Gettysburg in the fall of '78,
before arriving at Middlebury in
the fall of '79.
