Men's
tennis at Middlebury has risen to national
prominence over the past few seasons. The
team enjoyed its most successful season in
school history last season, advancing to
the NCAA semifinals, finishing the spring
with 13 wins. They also hosted an NCAA
Regional on campus for the second
consecutive year. Middlebury finished last
season ranked fourth nationally, while
earning the 12th spot two years
ago.
The
Panthers also sent four individuals to the
NCAA's last spring as Justin Ingoglia and
Nathan Edmunds went as singles players,
while Stu Brown and Steve Hulce took part
in doubles action. The Panthers also
excelled in the classroom as they earned a
3.43 team GPA, with four athletes earning
Academic All-American status.
The
Panthers compete in the NESCAC, arguably
the top Division III tennis conference in
the country. The team plays a full season
of action in the fall as well as the
spring season. The fall season is mostly
comprised of tournament play with the team
hosting a tournament as well as traveling
to the ECAC Championships, Rolex
Tournament, Bates Invitational and the
Cornell Invitational. In the spring, the
team plays between 12-16 dual matches.
This includes matches played during the
annual spring break trip.
Middlebury's
tennis squad carries between 10 and 12
players. Practice is held daily, and a
player is expected to attend practice
unless he has an academic conflict. The
on-court practices are supplemented by
strength and conditioning
training.
