Heinecken
enters his 28th season at the
helm of the Middlebury football
program. During the 1995 season
Heinecken became the seventh
coach in Division III New England
college football history to
record 100 wins. His 119 wins are
more than any other coach in
Middlebury's 103-year history of
Panther football. In 1977 and
again in 1981, he was selected
New England Coach of the Year.
Known
for his success in running the
Wing-T offense early in his
career, Heinecken made his debut
at Middlebury in 1973, after 11
years as an assistant coach at
the University of Delaware.
There, he coached both the Blue
Hens line and backfield, and was
the defensive backfield coach of
the 1972 Delaware team that won
the Lambert Cup.
Heinecken
played football during his
undergraduate years at Delaware.
He received Little All-America
honorable mention in football,
was named to the All-East and
All-Conference teams, and served
as captain his senior year. He
entered coaching in 1961 as a
graduate assistant in football
while working toward his master's
degree. Later he coached both
first-year basketball and varsity
lacrosse at Delaware. A
distinguished ROTC graduate in
1960, he served as a lieutenant
in the Army for two
years.
During
his time at Middlebury Heinecken
has also served as the men's
varsity tennis coach, and until
recently he served as an
assistant coach for the men's
lacrosse team. He and his wife,
Carol, reside in Cornwall and
have three grown children: Kevin,
Dawn, and Kerri.
